Volunteering the Green Way

The Habitat for Humanity of Athens/Limestone County recycles new, used overstocked, discontinued, and salvageable building materials and appliances donated by contractors, retailers, and individuals. The donated items are re-sold to the general public to help support Habitat in their efforts to build decent affordable housing.

Frequently Asked Questions about ReStore Volunteering

How old do ReStore volunteers have to be?

All volunteers must be at least 16 years of age. All volunteers will be required to fill out a waiver of liability for each calendar year they volunteer.

What is the time commitment to volunteer in the ReStore?

You can volunteer in the ReStore Mondays through Saturdays. Volunteers can choose from one of the following shifts: 8-12pm, 12-5pm, or a full day. We ask for a minimum 4 hour time commitment.

What kind of jobs will I do when I volunteer in the ReStore??

Customer Service Volunteer

  • Responsible for assisting ReStore customers
  • Greets all customers and assists them as needed
  • Completes sold tickets/receipts
  • Keeps store area clean and tidy
  • Organizes and displays donations
  • Practices good use of store policies and volunteer guidelines
  • Answers basic questions about Habitat and ReStore
  • Help ensure an efficient daily flow within the ReStore
  • Practices highest standards of donor, customer, and employee relations
  • Receiving/Pricing Volunteer

  • Works with ReStore Staff to unload vehicles and keep materials organized in dock area
  • Responsible for the cleaning, polishing, and mor repairs of donations
  • Ensures donations are clean and in working order prior to sale
  • Follows ReStore Pricing Guidelines when marking new items
  • Is continuously aware of security, safety, and housekeeping
  • Special Events Volunteer

  • Attends ReStore events inside and outside the store (such as Green Expos and Fairs)
  • Greets event attendees with enthusiasm and excitement
  • Is knowledgable about the ReStore and can communicate pertinent information about Habitat for Humanity of Athens/Limestone County to potential donors and customers
  • Able to adjust between high and slow paced work easily
  • Able to provide ReStore staff with feedback on event and ideas for best practices
  • Event times and locations vary, so flexibility is important

  • Warehouse/Merchandising Volunteer

  • Assists staff in moving new items to the sales floor
  • Places items safely within their respective departments
  • Merchandises donations to make more room, ensure beset display of product
  • Remove broken/damaged/unsalable materials from the sales floor and recycles/disposes of these items
  • Continuously monitors safety and security of the warehouse receiving area
  • Practices highest standards of donor, customer, and employee relations

    The store is open to the public Monday-Saturday, 8 AM-5PM. Pickups on Tuesdays. (Call to schedule one).

    What do I wear when I volunteer at the ReStore?

    Casual clothing that you don't mind getting dirty. Absolutely NO sandals, open-toed shoes, open heel/backless shoes, or flip-flops.
